Commercial Metal Roofing in Shreveport, LA

Call and we will connect you with an independent local provider.
CALL NOW: (318) 287-8236Drive the industrial corridors around Shreveport, out toward Greenwood or north toward Blanchard, and you will pass plenty of pre-engineered steel buildings: shops, warehouses, agricultural buildings, churches and service businesses. Many of them have metal roofs, and some low-slope buildings are good candidates for converting to metal. Call (318) 287-8236 and we will connect you with an independent licensed commercial roofing contractor who works on commercial metal. Shreveport Commercial Roofing Pros is a referral service; we do not install roofs.
Types of commercial metal roofs
Standing seam
Panels join at raised seams that are mechanically folded or snapped together, and clips hidden under the seams hold the panels to the structure. Because the fasteners are concealed, there are far fewer holes through the roof. The clips let panels expand and contract with temperature, which matters on a roof that bakes in a Louisiana afternoon and cools after a thunderstorm. Standing seam is the premium option and can work on fairly low slopes when the panel profile is rated for it.
Exposed-fastener panels
Often called R-panel or PBR panel, these ribbed sheets are screwed straight through to the purlins. They are economical and common on metal buildings. Every screw has a rubber washer, and over the years those washers harden, screws back out, and leaks start at the fasteners and laps.
Retrofit metal over a flat roof
Light-gauge framing can be built on top of an existing low-slope roof to create a sloped metal roof above it. This can eliminate chronic ponding but adds structural load and design work, so it usually needs an engineer's input.
When metal is worth considering
- An existing metal building roof is leaking at screws, laps and skylight panels
- The owner wants a long service life and is willing to pay more up front
- A low-slope roof ponds badly and a retrofit slope is on the table
- The building is a shop, warehouse or ag building already designed for metal
Metal roof problems callers describe
- Leaks at fastener heads with cracked or dried-out washers
- Rust starting at cut edges, laps and around rooftop equipment
- Leaks at ridge caps, end laps and gutters
- Old fiberglass skylight panels cracking and admitting water
- Panels loosened or bent after strong straight-line winds
- Dents from hail; on many metal roofs dents are cosmetic, but seams and fasteners deserve a close look after any hail event
Repair and restoration options
Not every leaking metal roof needs new panels. Common options include replacing fasteners with larger-diameter screws, sealing end laps and side laps, replacing skylight panels, treating surface rust, and then applying a coating system made for metal roofs. Restoration is usually far less expensive than replacement when panels are still structurally sound. A contractor should tell you plainly if rust has eaten through the panels, because coatings cannot fix holes in the steel.
Typical metal roofing cost ranges
Typical ranges from national cost guides, for budgeting only. Gauge, panel profile, finish, insulation and building height all move the price.
| Item | Typical national-guide range |
|---|---|
| Commercial metal roofing, installed | About $7 to $19 per sq ft |
| Standing seam with concealed clips | Toward the upper part of the range |
| Exposed-fastener panels | Toward the lower part of the range |
| Fastener replacement, lap sealing and coating | Often a fraction of replacement cost; priced after inspection |

Timeline
Metal panels are often fabricated or ordered to length, so lead time for material can be the longest part of the schedule. Installation on a small building may take days; a large warehouse or retrofit can take weeks. Repairs and re-screw projects can often be scheduled sooner. Wind is the main weather limit for handling long panels.
Metal roofs in Shreveport-Bossier: local specifics
Where they are. Metal buildings line the industrial areas south of Shreveport, including around the Port of Caddo-Bossier, and the business corridors serving Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City, a base of more than 22,000 acres that is home to Air Force Global Strike Command. Farther out, in rural Caddo, Bossier and Webster parishes, shops, ag buildings and churches are often pre-engineered steel.
Hail and wind on record. The February 11, 2024 storms brought reports of 1.5-inch hail four miles south of Benton and 1-inch hail north of Bossier City, with a 62 mph gust measured at Barksdale. On June 1, 2004, the Weather Service reported hail up to baseball size that broke windows in Shreveport. After hail, look past dents to the fasteners, seams and skylight panels.
Permits outside the cities. For metal buildings in unincorporated Bossier Parish, the parish lists Code Inspections Plus as its building official. In Caddo Parish, the City of Shreveport's permit guide says its Division of Permits and Inspections issues permits for the whole parish except Greenwood and Oil City. Confirm with the office before work starts.
Insulation under metal. Many older metal buildings have thin faced blanket insulation that sags or tears after years of humid summers. If panels are coming off, ask whether improving the insulation is part of the scope, and how the 2021 energy code applies to your project.
Questions to ask a metal roofing contractor
- What panel profile and gauge are you proposing, and is it rated for this roof's slope?
- Concealed clips or exposed fasteners? What fastener type and length?
- How will you handle thermal movement on long panel runs?
- For a retrofit over a flat roof, who checks the structure and does the design?
- What finish and paint system, and what does the finish warranty actually cover?
- If you are proposing restoration, how will you confirm the panels are sound first?
Checking a contractor before you sign in Louisiana
- State license on larger jobs. The Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors (LSLBC) requires a commercial license for commercial projects valued at $50,000 or more, counting labor and materials. Roofing falls under the board's "Roofing and Sheet Metal, Siding" subclassification of Building Construction, and a contractor may also hold the broader Building Construction classification. Ask for the license number and look it up on the LSLBC website. A contractor's name on a truck is not proof of a license.
- Small apartment buildings. For buildings used mainly as residences with up to four units, the LSLBC says roofing work of $7,500 or more requires the Residential Roofing or Residential Construction classification as of August 1, 2026. Owners of duplexes and fourplexes should ask which license covers their job.
- Permits. The LSLBC says Act 239 of 2025 requires permitting and inspection of roof construction and reroofing on residential and commercial structures for projects beginning on or after August 1, 2025. Inside Shreveport the permit comes from the city's Division of Permits and Inspections at Government Plaza; in Bossier City it comes from the Permits & Inspections Division on Benton Road. Ask the contractor to pull the permit in the contractor's name and schedule the inspections. Our guide to commercial roof permits and codes in Shreveport and Bossier City has the details.
- Insurance. Request certificates for general liability and workers' compensation, sent straight from the insurance agent, not handed over as a photocopy.
- Everything in writing. System, thickness, insulation, attachment, flashing details, how hidden damage is priced, payment schedule, warranty terms and cleanup.
Steel erection work, including some metal building installation, can fall under a separate LSLBC classification. If the project involves structural steel or a new metal building, ask the contractor which classification covers the scope.

CALL NOW: (318) 287-8236Frequently asked questions
Is it worth fixing an old metal building roof?
Often. If panels are not rusted through, new fasteners, sealed laps and a metal roof coating can extend service life for less than new panels.
Can a flat roof be converted to metal?
In some cases, using a retrofit framing system that creates slope over the existing roof. It adds load and needs design review.
Does hail ruin a metal roof?
Hail can dent panels, and on many roofs dents are cosmetic. Seams, fasteners and coatings should still be checked after a hail event.
